The practice
Gold Brand Software is the independent consulting practice of Brandon Goldfedder — a software engineer with more than thirty-five years of building systems that have to be right: regulated clinical data, federally funded research platforms, and the long-lived enterprise software a business actually runs on.
Engagements tend to be long and hands-on. I design the system, write production code, deploy it, and stay accountable for it in operation — often for years. That means the person making the architectural calls is the same person who has to live with them, which is the point.
Work spans commercial and government-funded sectors, and has included lead-architect, principal-investigator, and fractional-CTO roles alongside straight development.
Capabilities
Architecture & technical leadership
System design, technology selection, and the expensive trade-off calls. Setting technical direction, reviewing subcontractor and vendor work, and carrying architectural responsibility on funded research programs.
Regulated & clinical data systems
HIPAA-regulated registries and reporting. Multi-tenant data models, auditability, de-identification, and the operational discipline that regulated health data requires rather than merely claims.
Backend & platform engineering
Python service tiers, asynchronous web frameworks, REST APIs, relational data modeling, and plugin architectures that let a single codebase serve many customer-specific deployments.
Data-dense web applications
TypeScript and Angular front ends for people who live in the software all day: large grids, form and document editors, configurable report builders, and workflow-heavy interfaces.
Applied ML & reasoning under uncertainty
Bayesian networks, probabilistic and graphical models, forecasting and prediction markets, expert and rule-based systems, and pragmatic use of large language models where they earn their cost.
Delivery & operations
Docker-based build and deployment pipelines, per-customer configuration builds, Unix administration, and ownership of 24×7 production systems including zero-downtime release strategy.
Training & mentoring
Design patterns, object-oriented design, reuse, and testing practice. Courses developed and taught at Fortune 500 engineering organizations, defense primes, and universities.
Due diligence & early-stage support
Technical assessment, architecture review, and executive technical roles for startups during funding pursuits — including the unglamorous work of making a codebase legible to an outside evaluator.
Selected work
Client and program names are omitted. Descriptions are deliberately general.
-
Clinical registry and reporting platform Current
Architecture and lead development of a HIPAA-regulated trauma registry platform: Python service tier, Angular portal, a scripting and reporting engine for clinician-authored reports, and a build system that tailors and deploys a distinct configuration per hospital site. Ongoing, multi-year engagement.
-
Collaborative forecasting research platform Government-funded R&D
Senior architect and technical lead on a federally funded research program in combinatorial prediction markets, run jointly with a university research center. Owned technical design, 24×7 operations, and oversight of all subcontracted development. The underlying market-making approach was published in a peer-reviewed AI journal.
-
Enterprise workflow automation, telecommunications Patented
Chief architect of a distributed, component-based system for managing and tracking telecommunications service orders — CORBA services, web front end, Oracle back end. The design was awarded two United States patents.
-
Uncertainty-management R&D and commercial delivery VP Engineering
Led the engineering organization for a research firm working in Bayesian networks and uncertainty management across Java, Python, and C++. Principal investigator on several government and commercial contracts in the $1–3M range, and author of an agile methodology adapted to the realities of an R&D environment.
-
Contact center and CRM transformation CRM business unit
Ran a consulting firm's CRM business unit — sales, delivery, and architectural oversight. Engagements included a national publisher's contact center (data warehousing, legacy integration, CTI/IVR) and a satellite communications operator running 5,000+ concurrent agents, where the initial analysis identified roughly $500K per month in recoverable cost. Compensation-management software built by the unit was later OEM'd by a major CRM vendor.
-
Medical injury coding expert system Sole designer
Designed and built a PC-based expert system that coded injuries against standard medical coding systems, used in trauma centers and hospitals worldwide. Written in C, C++, and assembly on top of a purpose-built rule language — the start of a long run in trauma and clinical software.
-
Reusable components for defense programs Ada era
Reusable Ada component libraries exceeding 500,000 lines, a reuse-library cataloging tool, and a UI builder for Ada/X-Window applications, delivered to defense primes and integrators. Also served as director of training for the same firm's software engineering curriculum.
-
Online gaming integrity Patented
Behavioral models for detecting collusion between players in online games, based on conditional play behavior. Awarded a United States patent.
How I work
- Ownership over deliverables. I would rather be accountable for a system in production for a decade than hand over a document and leave. Most of my engagements have outlasted the contract that started them.
- Enough design, then working software. Sufficient architecture to avoid the mistakes that are expensive to undo, and no more. The rest is learned by building the thing and watching it run.
- Write down the reasoning, not just the result. Decisions, trade-offs, and the constraints that forced them — recorded in a form the next engineer can actually use. Patterns are a means of communication before they are a means of construction.
- Small footprint, low coordination cost. One engineer who can carry architecture, implementation, deployment, and operations removes a great deal of hand-off overhead. Where a team is needed, I would rather build and lead a small one.
